Walking is Wonderful and so good for us ...
walking can help us lose weight and maintain a healthy weight, it keeps our bones strong and prevents osteoporosis, it builds strength, flexibility and stamina. Plus, walking is a pleasant exercise, walking alone can be contemplative, walking with a companion can be stimulating, walking with a group can be competitive. But even better: A number of studies have shown that a moderate walk (about 45 minutes, three miles) relieves the stress that may trigger or aggravate illness, and stimulates your immune system. One study found that walking increased the activity of certain immune cells by about 57% for three hours after the walk.
And ... walking enhances mental function, and counteracts anger, depression, and anxiety! I know that personally i have often gone for a walk, and somewhere along the way, the solution to a problem suddenly pops into my mind. Similarly, I have often found after a walk, that something I was angry of anxious about somehow seems to have receeded in importance.
What more could we want than a good walk? So get on the walking shoes and get started!
